Another accolade for Dike’s of Stalbridge

Dorset independent supermarket Dike & Son has received national recognition, after judges from the prestigious Retail Industry Awards gave the Stalbridge family-run business a Highly Commended Runner-Up Award 2009 at a special dinner at the The Hurlingham Club in London last week.

Dike & Son were nominated in the Independent Retailer of the Year (3,000 sq ft and over) category, sponsored by Cadbury.

The store, which has been owned and run by the Dike family since 1851, has already received many commendations since opening its new superstore and cafe round the corner from its old premises in Stalbridge in November 2007.

With its firm commitment to providing locally sourced fresh food and support for local producers, the store’s reputation has grown steadily.

Retail Industry Award organisers told director Andy Dike: “You should be extremely proud at winning such a prestigious accolade – the competition was greater than we can ever remember, so being highly commended is a massive achievement.”

Andy Dike said: “The judges said it was very close, and we were a whisker away from winning the top prize. In the end we came runner up – but that’s still a huge achievement, when you consider there were thousands of entries.

“It is a great endorsement for everything we are trying to achieve here in Stalbridge – our commitment to locally produced food, boosting local employment, reducing our carbon footprint and, very importantly in the current climate, keeping our products competitively priced.

“I’d like to thank all the team who work for Dike’s and everybody that supplies our store for putting in such a great effort all year round.”

Last year the store picked up Best Independent Food Shop in the Blackmore Vale Media Taste of Dorset Awards, nominated by customers across north Dorset.
